Reigen is one of the oldest established settlements on the island, second only to Gyoson. It was founded a few decades after Gyoson was, out of groups of fishermen wanting to live away from the growing city, named after the previous Japanese Emperor. It maintained a rather sleepy existence afterwards - with the exception of the city being sometimes used for smuggling deals in the days of Port J.J. Astor - until the rise of the Japanese Empire. During the 20s and 30s, the IJA constructed a military base in Reigen officially to watch over the island and dissuade potential smuggling. Nobody had used it for smuggling in decades, of course. The IJA constructed the base to secure more power over the IJN, who they were battling for influence with during that period. Since then, the city has not seen too much in the way of historic events, retaining it's nature as a largely sleepy and inconsequential town.
The Imperial Nautre Area, directly to the south and west of the main drag of town, is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful areas of Ochay. Though treasured and respected for decades, the Nature Area was officially declared in 1997 after a campaign by the residents of Reigen to protect their natural heritage. Combining sweeping bluffs with dense forests and pleasant shorelines, the Imperial Nature Area has a little something for every naturalist. The few Rangers that do reside in the Nature Area offer frequent guided hikes and tours of the area, and in town in Reigen are a wide variety of publications detailing the best places within.
The Old Reigen Trading Post is one of the few remnants of the days of Port J.J. Astor that remain standing. The post was built just outside of Reigen in the 1830s as an out-of-the-way meeting place for Japanese and American traders - the American Fur Company wanted a slice of deals brokered within Port J.J. Astor, and Japanese authorities were more likely to catch on to any deal made in Gyoson. The trading post was abandoned not long after the American Fur Company pulled out of the island, but due to the slow growth of Reigen, it was never demolished for future development. The existence of the trading post was the major reason behind the IJA's decision to place their military base in Reigen. The fort is still maintained today by the Reigen Historical Society, often putting on reenactment days or giving history lessons on the trading post.
Reigen is unfortunately not as covered by transportation as some of the other cities are, owing to it's small size and general distance from other cities. It's not on any Highway, instead being on the Local Route between Gyoson and Point Rezanov. Ochay Transit operates bus services in and out of the town, but at a reduced frequency. Additionally, ferry services are infrequent - about two or three times a week - to Gyoson.
